Alef Automotive asserts that its "Model A" vehicle/aircraft is the first road-legal, parking-friendly flying automobile in the world.
FAA Approves Airworthiness Certificate: The self-described “flying car” of a California startup has received FAA certification for testing, making it the first electric vehicle to receive US regulatory sanction that can both fly and travel on roads.
Alef Automotive asserts that its “Model A” vehicle/aircraft is the first road-legal, parking-friendly flying automobile in the world. Also included are VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) capabilities. It should accommodate one or two passengers, and its range will be 200 miles on the road and 110 miles in the air.
The first deliveries are anticipated to commence by the end of the year, with prices beginning at $300,000. The FAA has confirmed that they have granted the company a limited airworthiness certificate, allowing them to use their aircraft for purposes such as display and scientific research.
The term “vehicle takeoff and landing” (VTOL) refers to the development of entirely electric VTOL aircraft by numerous companies. According to the FAA, Alef is “not the first aircraft of its kind” to receive a SAC. However, Alef asserts that its vehicle stands out because it can travel on roads and in the air, resembles a conventional automobile, and fits in standard parking spaces.
According to the company’s website, the flying car will be classified as a “low-speed vehicle,” indicating that its maximum speed on a standard roadway will be 25 mph. The company presumed on its website that drivers who required a quicker route would utilise Alef’s flight capabilities.
Before a vehicle can be driven legally on public roads, it must receive approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Engineers have been striving to perfect the vehicle since 2015. The 1985 “Back to the Future” films inspired a group of friends named Constantine Kisly, Pavel Markin, Oleg Petrov, and Dukhovny to design flying cars.
The company asserts that a skeleton prototype completed an autonomous test flight in 2018, and that a full-size prototype flew in 2019. However, Alef claimed that it could not conduct the essential R&D without first obtaining an FAA special airworthiness certificate.

Earlier this year, the company received refundable pre-orders for more than 400 of the vehicles, with the price set at $150 for the general queue and $1,500 for the priority queue.
