A former professional wrestler, Page was not born into a sports-oriented family and had never wrestled before. Hangman made his debut at ROH Champions vs. All-Stars on January 14, 2011, following his professional debut in 2008 on an indie circuit in his hometown. In the same year, he and Jason Blade won the CWF Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championship, which was their first professional wrestling victory.

After winning the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship in the following year, Stephen retired from the league, earning many championships for regional promotions throughout the country during his career. While in the Ring of Honor, Page lost to Matt Hardy in the final battle of 2013. Woltz was in a state of flux during his time on the circuit.

In addition to wrestling, Hangman served as a member of New Japan Pro-Wrestling from 2016 to 2019.
