Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman was born in the Acton neighbourhood of London on February 21, 1946. His father, Bernard William Rickman, was an aircraft fitter during World War II. Margaret Doreen Rose, his Welsh mother, was an English factory worker, house painter, decorator, and housewife. Through his maternal grandmother, he has Irish ancestry as well. Rickman was born with a birth defect that causes his jaw to be tight. This resulted in a deep, languid tone of voice that would become his trademark.

His father died of cancer when he was eight years old, leaving his mother and three siblings alone. Margaret Rickman remarried in 1960, but divorced her second husband three years later. Rickman excelled in watercolour painting, typography, and calligraphy as a child. Rickman attended the West Acton First School, the Derwentwater Primary School in Acton, and the Latymer Upper School in London through the Direct Grant System during his childhood. Here, he became involved in drama and theatre.

Rickman attended the Chelsea College of Art and Design from 1965 to 1968 and the Royal College of Art from 1968 to 1970 for his higher education. He became an in-house graphic designer for the magazine of the Royal College of Art. After starting a graffiti business with a few friends, he decided to pursue a career in acting, receiving his big break in “Die Hard” as Hans Gruber.
