After receiving his degree in 1979, he worked at the Dorodnitsyn Computer Centre on speech recognition technology. During his time at the Computer Centre, he developed a passion for video games. Pajitnov, an employee at the Computer Centre, became enraptured with computer video games.

As a child, Alexey relished playing pentominoes. After experiencing difficulty reassembling a set of pentominoes, he was inspired to create a game based on the concept. He started developing Tetris on an Electronic 60 in the computer centre of the facility.

After a couple of months, Alexey added music and a scoreboard to his game. In 1986, the game made its way from the Soviet Union to the United States. Several years later, he created Welltris, a sequel to Tetris. In 1991, he and Vladimir Pokhiko emigrated to the United States.

Pajitnov and Henk Rogers founded The Tetris Corporation in 1996. He was subsequently eligible to receive future game royalties. Afterward, he and Pokhiko founded the 3D software company AnimaTek and developed the game Pandora’s Box.

Alexei was employed by Microsoft from October 1996 to October 2005. He contributed to the MSN Games team and the Puzzle Collection feature of the Microsoft Entertainment Bundle during his time at Microsoft. Pajitnov appears in the première of the Apple TV+ biopic Tetris on March 31, 2023.
