Ambareesh Biography: Malavalli Huchchegowda Amarnath, better known by his screen name Ambareesh (29 May 1952 – 24 November 2018), was an Indian actor, media personality, and politician from the state of Karnataka. Along with Rajkumar and Vishnuvardhan, he is the most celebrated actor in Kannada cinema’s “triumvirate.

Ambareesh’s acting career began with a limited period of portraying antagonistic and supporting characters with his 1972 film debut in Puttanna Kanagal’s Naagarahaavu. After establishing himself as a leading actor portraying rebellious characters in a number of commercially successful films, he was dubbed a “rebel star.”

Early years

Ambareesh was born on May 29, 1952, in the village of Doddarasinakere, Mandya district, erstwhile Mysore State (now Karnataka). He was named “Malavalli Huchchegowda Amarnath” and was the sixth of Hucchegowda and Padmamma’s seven offspring. Chowdah, his great-uncle, was a violinist. Ambareesh concluded his secondary education in Mandya before moving to Mysore.

Ambareesh Career

Despite his initial objections, Kannada film director Puttanna Kanagal cast Ambareesh in his 1972 film Naagarahaavu. Ambareesh appeared in 208 films, including Kanagal’s Paduvaaralli Pandavaru, Shubhamangala, Masanada Hoovu, and Ranganayaki (1981). As of 2010, Ambareesh had played the leading role in the most Kannada films, surpassing Rajkumar’s record of 206 films and Vishnuvardhan’s record of 230 films. Ambareesh portrayed the furious youth of the 1980s in a number of films, including the political satire Antha (1981), Chakravyuha and New Delhi, Ranganayaki, Tony, Rani Maharani, Olavina Udugore, Hrudaya Haadithu, Hongkongnalli Agent Amar, Mannina Doni, and Odahuttisavaru. Gaanam (1982), despite being a commercial disaster, received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value due to his performance.

Ambareesh, a Kannada actor, rose to prominence through his roles in films such as Mamateya Madilu, Hrudaya Haadithu, Elu Sutinaa Kote, and Mouna Raga. He has won the NTR Award for best-supporting actor, the Film Fare Award for best actor, and the Film Fare Award. Ambareesh was the first Kannada actor to inaugurate the Mysore Dasara festival and received the Dr. Vishnuvardhan Award from the Karnataka Government in 2011. In 1994, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) and ran for office five times. Ambareesh served as minister of state for information and broadcasting in the fourteenth Lok Sabha, but he resigned in protest of the Cauvery Dispute Tribunal’s decision. In the General Elections of May 2009, he was defeated.

Personal Life

Ambareesh and Sumalatha became companions after meeting for the first time in 1984 on the set of the Kannada film Aahuti. In 1987, when they worked with New Delhi again, they drew closer. Two years after he proposed matrimony to her, they wed on December 8, 1991.[ Abhishek Gowda, their only child, is an actor.

Ambareesh was known for his camaraderie, primarily with his contemporaries of the 1980s and throughout the South Indian film industry. They included Rajinikanth, Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suhasini Maniratnam, Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh Daggubati, R. Sarathkumar, Raadhika, Jayaram, Naresh, Arjun Sarja, Ramesh Aravind among others. Ambareesh called themselves the “Class of the ’80s” and held their third reunion in 2017. He also maintained a close relationship with Vishnuvardhan from 1972, when they both made their film debuts with Naagarahaavu, until the latter’s demise in 2009.

Ambareesh Death

In 2014, Ambareesh developed respiratory issues and was frequently hospitalised. In March of that year, he was taken to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for treatment. On November 24, 2018, he was transported to a private hospital in Bangalore after experiencing a cardiac arrest at home. At 10:15 p.m. (IST), despite efforts to revive him, he was declared deceased. Following his demise, Ambareesh’s remains were transported to Sree Kanteerava Stadium, where political leaders, film industry professionals, and fans were permitted to pay their respects the next day. It attracted approximately 100,000 individuals.
