Lansbury was born on the 16th of October 1925 as a Libra in St. Pancras, Central London. Her mother was an actress, while her father was a former mayor and English timber merchant. Consequently, Lansbury was born into an affluent family and has English-Irish ancestry. Her family relocated to North London’s Mill Hill neighbourhood when she was four years old. When Lansbury was nine years old, her father passed away from gastric cancer, and the family faced financial hardship. Her mother became engaged to a Scottish colonel, and she graduated from South Hampstead High School in 1939. Lansbury frequented the movies and enrolled at the Webber Douglas School of Singing and Dramatic Art in Kensington to pursue acting. After the loss of Lansbury’s grandfather, her mother relocated the family to the United States. She obtained admission to New York’s Feagin School of Drama and Radio on a scholarship and graduated in March 1942.

Lansbury’s first film appearance was as Nancy Oliver, a scheming cockney maid, in “Gaslight” (1944). In the same year, she inked a seven-year contract with M.G.M. and began earning $500 per week. Her performance in “Gaslight” garnered her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She received her first Golden Globe Best Supporting Actress Award for her roles in “National Velvet” (1944) and “The Picture of Dorian Grey” (1945). Lansbury was an established actress by the 1950s. Her first television appearance was in a 1950 episode of “Robert Montgomery Presents” Lansbury terminated her contract with M.G.M. in 1952, following a string of unsuccessful assignments. In the 1960s, she starred in a variety of films, including “The Dark at the Top of the Stairs” (1960), “All Fall Down” (1962), “In the Cool of the Day” (1963), etc. Lansbury devoted more time on stage in the 1970s. Her performance in the 1978 film “Death on the Nile” was praised by critics. She appeared in additional films before portraying Mrs. Potts in “Beauty and the Beast” (1991), a Disney animation. She won several accolades for performing the film’s title song, including the Grammy for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media. Lansbury portrayed Aunt Adelaide in “Nanny McPhee” (2005) and “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” (2011) alongside Jim Carrey in the 2000s. 2013 also saw her receive an Academy Honorary Award for enduring achievement.

Lansbury appeared in a number of additional films, including “Mary Poppins Returns” (2018). She participated in multiple theatre productions, including the role of Gertrude in N.T.C.’s Hamlet, and rose to prominence on Broadway. From 1984 to 1996, she starred on “Murder, She Wrote” for her television career.
