Anita Desai is an Indian author of novels and short stories. She was born in 1937 in Mussoorie, India, to Toni Nime, a German immigrant, and D. N. Mazumdar, a Bengali merchant. Her Bengali father met her German mother when he was an engineering student in pre-war Berlin; they wed during a time when it was still uncommon for an Indian man to marry a European woman.

In the majority of her films after the 1980s, she played the role of a mother, which earned her widespread acclaim.
Anita Das also received the Odisha State Film Award (Best Actress) for her performance in the 1980 film Tapasya and again in 1983 for her leading role in the film Bhakta Salabeg. In 1987, she earned the Odisha State Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Eai Ta Dunia.
