Frank recorded her aspirations to become a journalist and a writer in her diary. Unfortunately, on August 4, 1944, the Gestapo, which was Nazi Germany’s secret police, discovered the covert annexe, and Frank and her family were relocated to Auschwitz, where they worked in a women’s labour camp while Otto was in a men’s camp. Frank and her sister were transported to the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen in November, but both contracted typhus and perished from the disease. Only Otto’s father remained alive following his liberation from Auschwitz by the Russians. He read Frank’s journal, and his colleagues persuaded him to publish it.
