Anne Frank Birthday
Anne Frank was born Annelies Marie Frank in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Anne and her family migrated to Amsterdam, Netherlands, when she was four and a half. Her father, Otto Frank (1889-1980), escaped the Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler in Germany with his wife and Frank’s other sister. In 1941, however, German forces arrived in the Netherlands and occupied it. Frank had previously attended Sixth Montessori School, a public school, but was compelled to transition to a Jewish school. Her elder sister, Margot, was a student at Jewish Lyceum, where Frank was required to enrol.
Frank received an autograph book with a small lock on the front and red and white linen binding on her thirteenth birthday. Frank decided to use the gift as a diary, and her first entry, dated June 20, 1942, read: “I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support.” Frank and her family were forced into concealment the following month. They decided to conceal themselves on a landing above the Opekta offices. There was a three-story building there, and Frank’s father operated a food-products business behind the back office. He was fortunate to have non-Jewish friends who would assist him and his family acquire food and other necessities.
Frank wrote consistently in her diary, reflecting on all of her annoyances, her fear of being captured, and her aspirations for the future. Frank recorded her aspirations to become a journalist and a writer in her diary. Unfortunately, on August 4, 1944, the Gestapo, which was Nazi Germany’s secret police, discovered the covert annexe, and Frank and her family were relocated to Auschwitz, where they worked in a women’s labour camp while Otto was in a men’s camp. Frank and her sister were transported to the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen in November, but both contracted typhus and perished from the disease. Only Otto’s father remained alive following his liberation from Auschwitz by the Russians. He read Frank’s journal, and his colleagues persuaded him to publish it. Her journal was subsequently not only published but also translated into more than seventy languages. “The Diary of a Young Girl/The Diary of Anne Frank” is a classic of war literature and a worldwide bestseller.
