Hamilton began singing in church choirs and school choirs as a child. Hamilton moved to New York after meeting orchestral flautist and producer Mark Sparks in 1992 and signing with Andre Harrell’s record label, Uptown Records.

He co-wrote Donell Jones’ hit song ‘U Know What’s Up’ in 1999. The following year, he worked as a backup singer for soul singer D’Angelo on his album “Voodoo” promotional tour. In the early 2010s, Hamilton began working with many Def Jam Recordings artists, including rappers Big K.R.I.T. and Nas. He sang on the latter artist’s album, “Life is Good,” which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. Hamilton released his sixth studio album, “What I’m Feeling,” in 2016, and it debuted at number two on the Billboard R&B chart, making it his best-performing album to date.
