The father of the renowned comedian Ari Shaffir, Nat Shaffir (born Nathan Spitzer), is of Romanian descent. In 1950, he and his family departed Romania for Haifa, Israel. Following three years of military service in Israel, Nat relocated to the United States. Ari is the second of his and Merryl’s (formerly Rich’s) five children.

During Ari’s childhood, his family adhered to traditional Jewish practices. Since his family’s establishment in Maryland when he was nine years old, he has adhered to the tenets of Judaism. He devoted two years to the study of sacred texts at a location known as “Yeshiva” in Israel.

Ari attended Yeshiva University in New York City for a year after returning to the United States before transferring to the University of Maryland. He obtained his degree in English Literature in 1999.

Following his graduation from college, he relocated to Los Angeles in pursuit of a comedy career.
