Audrey Hepburn Birthday

Audrey Kathleen Ruston, better known as Audrey Hepburn, was born in Ixelles, Belgium, on May 4, 1929. Her birth gave the world one of the most prestigious performing names in history. Hepburn attended education in England, where she received her citizenship from her father, but she relocated to the Netherlands in 1939 as World War II broke out. Even though Hepburn faced numerous obstacles at the time, she was able to begin her ballet studies in Amsterdam. In the 1950s, Hepburn began using her talents by performing and working as a model and performer. In 1951, she made her first Broadway appearance. In 1953, Hepburn earned her first and career-launching role in the Oscar-winning film “Roman Holiday” — less than two years after making her stage debut.

In 1954, following the premiere of “Roman Holiday,” the film won a number of accolades. Hepburn received a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award, and a British Academy Film Award for her performance. However, this was only the beginning for Hepburn, as in 1954 she appeared in “Ondine” alongside Mel Ferrer. Hepburn and Ferrer fell in love as co-stars and were married on September 25 of the same year. On July 17, 1960, in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, the couple’s first and only son Sean Hepburn Ferrer was born, following several miscarriages. Hepburn also starred in two of her most well-known films during the 1960s: “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961) and “My Fair Lady” (1964).

Hepburn’s life began to alter in 1967 when she decided to enter semi-retirement and in 1968 when she divorced Ferrer. On January 18, 1969, Hepburn and Andrea Dotti wed after falling in love upon first meeting. On February 8, at age 40 and one year after her marriage, Hepburn gave birth to her second son, Luca Dotti. Hepburn was also a notable humanitarian, and in 1976 she was honoured for her efforts. In 1988, she began her mission as a UNICEF ambassador. In 1992, Hepburn received the devastating news that she had appendix cancer, and on January 20, 1993, she passed away. Hepburn’s legacy is still thriving, and her sons continue to honour their mother in a variety of ways.
