Augusto Pinochet Biography: Augusto Jose Ramon Pinochet Ugarte was born in Valparaiso, Chile, on November 25, 1915. Avelina Ugarte Martinez and Augusto Pinochet Vera were his parents. Before enrolling at Military School in Santiago in 1931, Pinochet attended classes primarily in Valparaiso. In 1935, he received his second lieutenant degree in the infantry. Before enrolling in the Chilean War Academy in 1948, Pinochet was a member of several regiments. He resumed his teaching duties at the military academy in 1951 in the capacity of Officer Chief of Staff.
A career as an instructor, a graduate, and a mission participant led to his promotion to general chief of staff in 1972. Chile’s civilian rule ended after Commander-in-Chief Pinochet initiated a coup d’état and seized power.
1974 saw the installation of him as Supreme Head of the Nation by the military junta in power. Right-wing ideology influenced the subsequent authoritative regime of General Pinochet. Owing to his ruthless persecution of political dissidents and opposing parties, he was responsible for more than 3,000 executions and disappearances. The number of internees exceeded 80,000, with tens of thousands enduring sexual assault and torture. Under the influence of free-market principles, the military government led by Pinochet enacted economic policies including the reversal of tariff protections for domestic industry, currency stabilization, and the privatization of social security and state-owned enterprises. His regime implemented stringent measures to curtail trade unions and restrict freedom of expression, akin to that of a genuine dictatorship. In 1998, he retired and was sworn in as a senator for life.
October 1998 saw the detention of Pinochet in London on charges of human rights violations, embezzlement, and tax fraud; he was also accused of acquiring at least $28 million through corrupt means. On December 10, 2006, he passed away from congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema. He was still facing approximately 300 pending criminal allegations from before, during, and after his reign at the time of his death. Five children and Pinochet’s spouse Lucía Hiriart Rodríguez, whom he wed in January 1943, survived him.
