Early Years

Born in Wayanad, he was an avid art enthusiast. He attended Sulthan Bathery’s S. K. M. Higher Secondary School. Later, he graduated from the Trivandrum College of Engineering. He began his career in acting and film direction with short films.

His short films gained widespread popularity. Eventually, he became an assistant director for the Malayalam film Thira. In 2015, he began directing and produced a massive success. Currently, he is one of the most prominent directors and his films are all hits.

Basil Joseph Career

Basil Joseph began his acting career in 2012 with the short film CET Life while he was studying engineering at the College of Engineering in Trivandrum. During his tenure at Infosys, Trivandrum, he also scripted and directed short films with Albert S. Oru Thundu Padam and Priyamvadha Katharayano.

Basil began his career in the Malayalam film industry in 2013 when he assisted Vineeth Sreenivasan on his third directorial effort, Thira. In 2015, he made his directorial début with the film Kunjiramayanam, in which Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan acted together for the first time. The film told the story of the inhabitants of an imaginary village named ‘Desom’ where mythology, legends, and superstitions play a significant role in daily life.

The movie was a box office triumph in 2015 Malayalam onam film releases. Basil Joseph’s second film as director Godha, a 2017 sports comedy film centred on wrestling and starring Punjabi actress Wamiqa Gabbi in her Malayalam film debut, was a wrestling-centred sports comedy. The film was a commercial triumph and went on to become Tovino Thomas’ highest-grossing film of the era. In his third film, Minnal Murali, Tovino Thomas portrays a local saviour with superpowers. The film, which was declared in 2020 and premiered on Netflix India on 24 December 2021, was the first superhero film in the history of the Malayalam film industry and was released simultaneously in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.

Basil Joseph made his acting debut in the 2013 Malayalam film Up & Down: Mukalil Oralundu and has since appeared in approximately 18 Malayalam films in varied supporting roles.
