Bela Lugosi Birthday

The horror film genre is practically synonymous with the name Bela Lugosi. Two decades prior to his demise, he dominated the screen, garnering notoriety for his thick Hungarian accent. Lugosi was born Béla Ferenc Dezsœ Blaskó into a Hungarian-Serbian family on October 20, 1882, in Lugos, Austria-Hungary (presently known as Lugoj, Romania). At the age of twelve, he abandoned his studies and fled his residence. At the provincial level, he initially appeared in operettas and plays with limited significance prior to transitioning to Shakespearean productions. Following his relocation to Budapest, he performed in scores of roles at the National Theatre of Hungary. Later, under the name Arisztid Olt, he transitioned to the silver screen with his debut appearance in “Leoni Leo” (1917).

After Hungary experienced political unrest in 1920, Lugosi relocated to Vienna and subsequently established his residence in Berlin. His acting career continued with German silent films including “The Head of Janus” and “Hypnose.” He maintained his acting career in New York the same year by collaborating with other Hungarian expatriate actors. 1922 marked the debut of his English-language Broadway performance in “The Red Poppy.” He made his first appearance on the big screen in the United States the following year in the silent drama “The Silent Command.” He maintained a lengthy career in silent films and stage productions. His Broadway adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic novel “Dracula,” which opened in 1927, was an enormous success.

He relocated to Hollywood in 1928 and entered into a contractual agreement with Fox Films. Upon Universal Pictures’ acquisition of the film rights to the stage adaptation of “Dracula” in which Lugosi had previously appeared, he insisted that the Count also be portrayed in the film. Ultimately, he was cast in the role, and the resulting film adaptation of the classic became one of its most renowned. Aside from that, he was relegated to the role of a horror antagonist for the remainder of his career, a consequence of this success. It was also “Costello Meet Frankenstein” (1948) that marked Lugosi’s final film appearance as Dracula and his final “A” film. In 1956, Lugosi collapsed and died from a myocardial infarction.
