Bharathidasan
Bharathidasan Biography: Kanakasabai Subburathinam (Tamil: 29 April 1891 – 21 April 1964; popularly known as Bharathidasan) was a Tamil poet and rationalist of the 20th century whose works focused primarily on sociopolitical issues. His writings stimulated the development of the Dravidian movement in Tamil Nadu. In addition to poetry, his viewpoints were also expressed in plays, film scripts, short stories, and essays. He was mentored by a man named Bharathi Mudaliar, after whom he took the name “Bharathidasan” (it is a fallacy that he was named after Subramaniya bharathiyar). The government of the Puducherry union territory has adopted Bharathidasan’s song of invocation to Goddess Tamil as the Puducherry state anthem.
Bharathidasan was born to Kanagasabai Mudaliar and Lakshmi Ammal a prosperous Pondicherry merchant family. Subburathinam was his birth name. Renowned academics who were experts in Tamil literature, Tamil grammar, and Saiva Siddhanta Vedanta instructed him. He studied at Pondicherry’s Collège Calvé. Bharathidasan met Subramaniya Bharathiyar in 1909, and his interactions with the Mahakavi had a profound effect on him. He began his career as a Tamil instructor in the French territory of Karaikal.
He actively participated in the Indian Independence Movement and openly opposed the British and French governments in his writings. The French government sentenced and imprisoned him for speaking out against the French government that ruled Pondicherry at the time.
Throughout his writing career, political leaders including Annadurai, M. Karunanidhi, Tanjore Poet Ramanathan, and M. G. Ramachandran encouraged him. He was first elected to Puducherry’s legislative assembly in 1955. He lost the 1960 election. Bharathidasan continued to be a prolific writer until he died in a hospital in Madras (now Chennai) in 1964.
