William Sanford Nye, better known as Bill Nye, is a well-known educator who was born in Washington, D.C. on November 27, 1955. His parents, Jacqueline Jenkins and Edwin Darby Nye, both served in the military during WWII. He went to Lafayette Elementary and Alice Deal Middle School. Later, he received a scholarship to Sidwell Friends School, where he graduated in 1973. Nye relocated to Ithaca, New York, after graduation to attend Cornell University, where he majored in mechanical and aeronautical engineering. He graduated in 1977 and worked as an engineer for the Boeing Company in Seattle.

Nye began his stand-up comedy career while working at Boeing. He left Boeing in 1986 to pursue his new career. On “Almost Live!” he worked as a writer/actor. After a guest cancelled an appearance, Nye was invited to step in, doing comedic science demonstrations. From 1991 until 1993, he was a regular on the show. By 1993, a new show for youngsters named “Bill Nye the Science Guy” had been launched. The series aired from 1993 until 1998. It went on to become one of the most-watched educational television shows in the United States, receiving 19 Emmys. Following the success of “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” Nye attempted to make a comeback with “The Eyes of Nye,” an adult-oriented science show. It debuted in 2005 but only lasted one season due to financial constraints. In 2016, Nye appeared in the Netflix series “Bill Nye Saves the World.”
