He was a student at McCalla School, where he demonstrated exceptional athletic prowess on the school athletic teams.

While Jackson was still in high school, the New York Yankees extended him an offer to join their team. Jackson unexpectedly declined the invitation to enroll at Auburn University. Because he had promised his mother that he would be the first in his family to attend college, Jackson made that difficult choice. Jackson received a football scholarship to attend Auburn University. After graduating from college in 1986, Jackson signed with the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball. Jackson was an extremely ambitious man who had no plans to let up on any of his goals. The following year, in 1987, the Los Angeles Raiders selected Jackson in the National Football League draft. Jackson was a member of the Raiders’ roster until 1991 when a hip injury compelled him to retire from the sport of football.

Bo Jackson Baseball Career

Jackson was ready to leave college and start playing football professionally. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected the guy in question with their first overall pick in the 1986 NFL Draft. But he declined to play for the Buccaneers because of an event that resulted in him having to forfeit his senior collegiate baseball season during a tour of the team’s facilities. The Buccaneers had misrepresented the visit’s NCAA approval; consequently, he was ineligible to participate in collegiate athletics. According to him, the Buccaneers’ inability to secure NCAA sanction was a calculated attempt to convince him to switch to professional football rather than baseball. Consequently, he declined to enter into a contract with them and instead elected to compete in major league baseball for the Kansas City Royals, the team that had selected him in the 1986 amateur selection.

Jackson joined the Royals on a three-year, $1.07 million contract after spending 53 games with the Memphis Chicks, their Class AA minor league affiliate. He was promoted to the major leagues in September 1986, and by 1987 he was a member of the Royals’ roster. Following his release by the Royals in 1991 on account of an injury, he was extended a contract by the Chicago White Sox for three years. The contract stipulated a base salary of $700,000 per season and included a $8.15 million performance-based incentive. Jackson appeared in two seasons with the White Sox, in 1991 and 1993; he was retired and placed on the disabled roster in 1992 due to hip replacement surgery. At the age of 32, he concluded his professional athletic career with the California Angels in 1994, at which point he retired.

In 1987’s seventh round, the Raiders drafted Jackson 183rd overall. Jackson was more amenable to the idea after learning Raiders owner Al Davis would allow him play baseball and football. Despite missing NFL games, he signed a five-year, $7.4 million contract to finish each MLB season before joining the Raiders. Davis also reportedly gave Jackson a $500,000 signing bonus and the largest non-quarterback salary in NFL history.

Throughout his four NFL seasons, Jackson accumulated 2,782 yards on the ground and 16 touchdowns while averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Additionally, he hauled in forty passes for 352 yards and two touchdowns. Following a tackle in his final professional football encounter in January 1991, he sustained a dislocated hip. It ultimately led to avascular necrosis of his left hip joint, necessitating a hip replacement procedure. This injury caused his release from the Royals and persisted until his 1994 retirement.
