Bob Newhart Birthday

Bob Newhart was born at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, Illinois on September 5, 1929. Julia Pauline Newhart, a homemaker, and George David Newhart, a co-owner of a plumbing and heating supply company, are both of Irish descent, while his father also has German ancestry. His grandmother was originally from Ontario’s St. Catharines. Newhart attended Roman Catholic institutions in the Chicago area, including St. Catherine of Siena Grammar School in Oak Park, and graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep in 1947.

Newhart began his acting career in the 1970s on “The Bob Newhart Show” as Chicago psychologist “Robert Hartley,” and in the 1980s on “Newhart” as Vermont proprietor “Dick Loudon.” In the 1990s, he starred in two unsuccessful sitcoms, “Bob and George” and “Leo.” Newhart’s film credits include “Major Major in Catch-22” and “Papa Elf in Elf.” In “The Rescuers” and “The Rescuers Down Under,” he provided the voice of Bernard. In 2004’s “The Librarian,” he portrayed library director Judson, a role he reprised in 2014’s “The Librarians.” On September 15, 2013, the first of Newhart’s six guest appearances on “The Big Bang Theory” as Professor Proton earned him his first Primetime Emmy Award, followed by five more.

Newhart was initially introduced to Virginia “Ginnie” Quinn, the daughter of character actor Bill Quinn, by Buddy Hackett. They exchanged wedding vows on January 12, 1963. They have four children named Robert, Timothy, Jennifer, and Courtney as well as ten grandchildren. They have raised their offspring in the Roman Catholic faith. He is a member of the Catholic Motion Picture Guild and the Beverly Hills, California Church of the Good Shepherd. In 1985, Newhart was hospitalised with secondary polycythemia as a result of his long history of excessive smoking. After a few weeks, he recovered and has since quit smoking. In 1995, Newhart invested in Rotijefco (a combination of his children’s names), which acquired the radio station KKSB in Santa Barbara, California. The format was modified to conform to adult standards, and the station’s call letters were changed to KZBN (his initials). In 2005, Rotijefco sold the station to Santa Barbara Broadcasting, which altered the call letters to KZSB and the station’s format to news and talk radio.
