He formed The Pacemakers, a funk band, with his older brother and several of their friends when he turned seventeen. James Brown engaged the services of the Pacemakers as his backing band in 1970. Known as The J.B.’s, they collaborated with him for nearly a year. The Pacemakers collaborated with James Brown on a number of funk compositions, such as ‘Super Bad,’ ‘Bewildered,’ and ‘The Grunt.’

Collins returned to Cincinnati, where he and his brother, along with five others, formed another band called House Guests. Shortly thereafter, he became a member of Funkadelic and contributed bass to a number of the group’s tracks. In 1976, he established Bootsy’s Rubber Band, which debuted at the top of the R&B album chart with its 1978 album “Bootsy? Player of the Year” and gave birth to the number-one R&B single ‘Godzilla.’ Following the 1980 release of his debut solo album, “Ultra Wave,” he participated in a number of musical collaborations with notable artists including Deee-Lite, Jerry Harrison, and Malcolm McLaren.

He wed Patti in 1996, and the two jointly administer the Bootsy Collins Foundation, an organization whose mission is to educate youngsters about the music industry. In his seventies, he suffered from a protracted addiction to L.C.D., but his wife and other factors assisted in his recovery.
