Alvarez learned to ride horses as a child, a pastime he continues to enjoy. Alvarez was the third of eight children in his large family. Red hair was inherited by Alvarez from his mother, Ana Maria. Alvarez stated in an interview that he may have an Irish ancestor. However, Alvarez was not always the celebrated individual he is today. Early on, he was bullied for his red hair because he was dubbed Jicama con Chile, a reference to a popular Mexican snack.

Bullying did not prevent Alvarez from demonstrating his fortitude. Alvarez began boxing at age 13 after observing his elder brother become a professional boxer. Indeed, at the age of 15, Alvarez won the Junior Mexican National Boxing Championship. In his amateur career, he had a record of 44-2, with 12 victories coming by knockout. However, he was defeated by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and consequently forfeited his titles. This defeat did not discourage Alvarez; he continued to fight and win additional championships. Later, Alvarez ventured into business when he founded Canelo Promotions to promote sports in Mexico. In 2013, the organisation represented forty boxers in Mexico.
