As a child, Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero Anderson lived in Washington, D.C. She was the daughter of Pedro Julio Figueroa del Rivero, a saxophonist and clarinetist in the U.S. Navy Band, and Katherine Anderson, a government clerk.

Rivera, the daughter of an African American, Scottish, and Irish mother and a Puerto Rican father, was born into a family of five. She was seven years old when her mother became a widow and began working at the Pentagon.

In 1944, her mother enrolled her at the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet (now Jones-Haywood School of Dance). Rivera was fifteen when a teacher from George Balanchine’s School of American Ballet visited their studio and selected her, along with one other pupil, for an audition in New York City.

Chita Rivera Personal Life

During the first week of December 1957, Rivera married Tony Mordente, a fellow West Side Story dancer. Due to her critical performance in West Side Story, the London production was rescheduled for 1958 until she gave birth to their daughter, Lisa. As a result of the significance of her performance, Rivera and his wife finalized their divorce in 1966. The woman was a Catholic.

The company Call Me Madam, starring Elaine Stritch, auditioned Rivera with a friend in 1951, and Rivera was given the role. As a Broadway star in 1957, she performed in Guys and Dolls, Can-Can, Mr. Wonderful with Sammy Davis, Jr., Seventh Heaven, and The Maurice Chevalier Special. She then starred in West Side Story as Anita in 1957.

She appeared three times on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1960 and won praise for her performances on Broadway and in London opposite Peter Marshall, but Janet Leigh played Rose in the film.

Rivera appeared on the Judy Garland Show and starred with Alfred Drake in Zenda in 1963. In 1964, Rivera returned to Broadway with Bajour and starred in The Outer Limits.

In 1965, she recorded her debut Dot Records single, and in 1966 she recorded a Buddy Holly cover album with Petty’s Fireballs at his Clovis, New Mexico, studio.

The actress has performed on many national tours, including Bob Fosse’s Sweet Charity with Shirley MacLaine (1969). The Hollywood Palace, twice The Carol Burnett Show (including February 22, 1971), and Connie Richardson on The New Dick Van Dyke Show between 1973 and 1974.

In 1975, Rivera was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in Bob Fosse’s original cast of Chicago. In addition to her ballet teachers, Rivera credited Leonard Bernstein and Verdon, with whom she starred in Chicago.

It was in 1981 that she played Fastrada in a televised version of Pippin. She also received nominations for two Tony Awards for her performances in Bring Back Birdie (1981) and Merlin (1983) on Broadway.

Her performance in Jerry’s Girls in 1986 earned her a Tony Award nomination.

During her recovery, Rivera returned to performing after she had suffered twelve broken bones in her left leg. She toured the country in Can-Can in 1988 and opened a restaurant with novelist Daniel Simone. Her restaurant, Chita’s, is located between 9th and 10th Avenues on 42nd Street. It was a popular after-theater venue until 1994.
