Chopin Birthday

Chopin was born in elazowa Wola, a village located near Sochaczew in the Mazovia region of the Duchy of Warsaw. In October 1810, when he was seven months old, his family relocated to Warsaw, where his father was hired as a French language and literature instructor at a school located in the Saxon Palace. Young Chopin’s first piano lessons were taught by his older sister, Ludwika, followed by his mother. His musical talent soon became apparent, earning him a reputation as “the second Mozart” in Warsaw. At the age of seven, he had written two Poles; the first was published in the engraving studio of Father Cybulski, director of an organ school and one of the few Polish music publishers. The prodigy was featured in Warsaw’s newspapers, and ‘little Chopin’ became a sensation in the aristocratic salons of the capital, where he also began performing charity concerts. He made his first public appearance as a pianist at the age of eight.

Chopin left Warsaw on 2 November 1830 to perform in Western Europe, and he never returned to Poland. At the end of the month, the November Uprising broke out, and Titus Woyciechowski’s travelling company returned home to participate. Chopin remained in Vienna out of concern for his family members in Poland. After visiting Munich and Stuttgart, he arrived in Paris in September 1831, although his original destination had been Italy. He had already composed a number of notable works, such as his two piano concertos and a few of his Op.10 studies. Chopin was welcomed in Paris by eminent Polish exiles and introduced to some of the foremost pianists of the time. During his time in Paris, Chopin performed in a number of concerts. In addition, he contributed to the composition of the Hexameron (1837), the sixth and final variation on Chopin’s Bellini theme.

In 1848, Chopin performed his final concert in Paris and toured England and Scotland with his admirer and student Jane Stirling. They arrived in London in November and were able to perform several concerts and ballroom numbers. Due to his chronic lung disease, he was unable to teach and perform in 1849 after returning to Paris. His sister Ludwika, who had given him his first piano lessons, cared for him, and he passed away early on the 17th of October.
