Early Life

On December 19, 1924, Cicely Tyson was born in the Bronx. Her parents were immigrants from West India who first settled in New York City before relocating to East Harlem. Her father was William Augustine Tyson, and her mother was Fredericka (Huggins) Tyson. Tyson grew raised in a pious home where he attended prayer services at the East Harlem Episcopal Church and participated in the choir.

Career

In the 1956 movie “Carib Gold,” she landed her first acting job. In 1958, she made her stage debut in “Dark of the Moon” at the Harlem Y.M.C.A. She debuted on television in “Frontiers of Faith” in 1961. Early in the 1960s, Tyson was a part of the original cast of “The Blacks,” a drama by French playwright Jean Genet. The show was the longest-running off-Broadway non-musical of the decade, with 1,408 performances.

Her performance in “Moon on a Rainbow Shawl” earned her the 1961–1962 Vernon Rice Award. Tyson played the lead role in the 1972 movie “Sounder,” for which she received Best Actress nominations from the N.S.F.C. and the N.B.R., as well as an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award. In the 1974 television movie “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” she starred. Her portrayal of a black lady before the start of the civil rights movement garnered her an Emmy Award for Actress of the Year and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie.

Tyson narrated the acclaimed documentary “Up from the Bottoms: The Search for the American Dream.” In 2013, she was awarded the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. She acted in the Netflix original movie “A Fall From Grace” in 2020. In 2021, she published her autobiography, “Just as I Am.” On January 28, 2021, she passed away.
