In contrast to his older siblings, Howard was a relatively reserved and quiet child who seldom caused his parents any problem during his childhood. Although he received average grades in academics, he demonstrated exceptional prowess in athletics. He participated in his school’s basketball program as well. Nevertheless, he made the decision to forgo higher education in favor of employment. After failing to complete high school, Howard began earning a livelihood through odd jobs. Additionally, he developed a passion for singing and performing. A proficient ballroom performer and vocalist, he developed over time. He would frequently perform at the Triangle Ballroom in Brooklyn. In addition to music and comedy, he frequently observed his siblings in vaudeville as stooges. After the conclusion of their performance, Howard would remain backstage.

He debuted onstage as a comedy musical conductor in 1928. His infantile demeanor and inherent comedic allure instantly captivated audiences, particularly children. He participated in several brief acts between 1940 and 1943, including “Cactus Makes Perfect,” “A Plumbing We Will Go,” “We Want Our Mummy,” “An Ache in Every Stake,” and “They Stooge to Conga.” In 1947, he made his last appearance with the Stooges in the short film “Half-Wits Holiday.”
