Dave John Matthews was born in Gauteng, South Africa, on January 9, 1967. He is the second youngest of John and Val’s four children. His family relocated to New York when his physicist father began working for the information technology company I.B.M. He started playing the guitar at age nine. In 1980, Matthews became a naturalised citizen of the United States of America. Matthews began performing publicly in 1986 while living with his mother in Charlottesville, Virginia.

In 1991, while bartending at Miller’s, where he met his future bandmates, he formed his eponymous group, the Dave Matthews Band. The band performed for the first time in public at a benefit for the Middle East Children’s Alliance. 1994 marked the release of their debut studio album, “Under the Table and Dreaming.” The band signed with the record label R.C.A. Records the same year. In 1997, The Dave Matthews Band opened for the legendary rock group The Rolling Stones. Throughout the 1990s, Matthews focused on writing for and performing with his band.

Matthews began devoting more time to his solo career just after the turn of the century.
