Early Life
David Bowie was born in Brixton, London, as David Robert Jones. Margaret Mary was his mother, and Haywood Stenton Jones was his father. He had a reputation as a bright, narrow-minded young man. In 1962, at the age of 15, he started his first band, the Konrads. Bowie joined the King Bees after a brief period with the band. Career
Bowie rejoined the King Bees and departed the group once more a month later. He joined the Manish Boys this time, but Bowie was still not happy with this band. He moved on and joined the Lower Third, a fourth band. But Bowie was a hard guy to win over, and after a brief stay, he left the Lower Third. Bowie had started to transition into a solo performer at this time. Lindsay Kemp was his teacher for mime and avant-garde theater. It was not until he released “Space Oddity” in July 1969 that Bowie experienced widespread financial success. “Space Oddity” was a huge hit when it was released because it happened to coincide with the Apollo 11 spacecraft launch.
