David Walter Foster Biography: David Walter Foster was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on November 1, 1949. Eleanor May Foster, a homemaker, and Maurice “Maury” Foster, an office worker, are the parents of Foster. At the age of 13, he matriculated into the music department at the University of Washington in 1963. (1965) He participated in an audition for the bandleader position at an Edmonton nightclub operated by jazz musician Tommy Banks. Banks served as a mentor to Foster in the areas of jazz, record production, and the music industry. A year later, he made the decision to relocate to Toronto in order to perform with Ronnie Hawkins. He began performing with Chuck Berry’s support band in 1966, and he and his band, Skylark, relocated to Los Angeles in 1974.

Foster collaborated with George Harrison on the albums “Thirty-Three & ⅏” the following year and “Extra Texture” in 1975. He also made a contribution to the 1979 album “I Am” by Earth, Wind & Fire. The 1980s were a hectic decade for the maestro. Foster was the producer for The Tubes, a band based in San Francisco. His two albums with the group were “The Completion Backward Principle” (1981) and “Outside Inside” (1983). The American rock band Chicago also had three albums produced by him: “Chicago 16” (1982), “Chicago 17” (1984), and “Chicago 18” (1986). ‘Glory of Love,’ which topped the charts in 1986, was a composition in which he worked closely with the lead singer of the band, Peter Cetera. Whitney Houston performed “I Have Nothing” in the film “The Bodyguard,” and the song was co-written by Foster and his former spouse, Linda Thompson. A contract he signed with Warner Brothers in 1995 authorized him to establish his own boutique record label, 143 Records, under the leadership of his then-manager Brian Avnet as C.E.O. Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds and he collaborated on the composition of ‘The Power of the Dream,’ the official anthem for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. His daughter Amy Foster-Gilles and he collaborated on the composition ‘I’ll Make It Up As I Go.’ The film “The Score,” which debuted in 2001 and featured Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando, featured the song. ‘Stand Up for Love,’ a composition by the father-daughter duo in collaboration with Beyoncé, was designated as the anthem for World Children’s Day.

Foster initiated a new phase of his professional trajectory in the early 2010s with the appointment of chairman of Universal’s Verve Music Group. He enlisted the services of renowned jazz musicians Diana Krall, Andrea Bocelli, Natalie Cole, Sarah McLachlan, and Smokey Robinson in an effort to transform the renowned jazz label into the preeminent label for up-and-coming artists as well as seasoned professionals. In 2016, subsequent to the record label’s restructuring, he and Verve entered into a separation. Since 2015, he has served as a judge on the “Asia’s Got Talent” panel.
