Her parents encouraged her to sing as a child, giving her her first singing lessons at age six. At St. Xavier’s College, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
Shaw began her career as a model, advancing to the final round of the 2004 Miss India beauty pageant before being eliminated. She began a singing career after recommitting herself to achieving success in the Indian entertainment industry following this setback.
2004 saw the release of her debut album, Baby Doll, named after her adopted stage name. She followed up her impressive debut with Baby Doll Chapter 2, which featured numerous remixes of hit songs such as “Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar” and “Rangeela Re.”
Her music consisted primarily of modernised remixes of old Hindi songs, with a bass-heavy, hip hop-influenced sound. She was released by Saregama India Records. MTV India was primarily responsible for promoting her music by playing her seductive and wildly popular music videos.
Shaw decided to capitalise on the success of her burgeoning music career by pursuing a career in Bollywood. She signed on to star in Daag – The Shades of Love, directed by Hriday Shetty. However, the project was eventually abandoned.
She made her acting debut opposite Emraan Hashmi and Kunal Khemu in Mahesh Bhatt’s controversial film Kalyug. Shaw’s first role, in which he portrayed a pornstar, was generally praised by critics.
In December 2005, she wrapped production on her second film, Karma, Confessions and Holi, which was directed by Manish Gupta. In the English-language international film, Sushmita Sen, Randeep Hooda, and Naomi Campbell also starred.
