Washington is the middle kid of three. His sister is older than him and his brother is younger. In Mount Vernon, he went to Pennington-Grimes Elementary School. In 1970, he started at Mainland High School in Florida. After that, Washington went to Fordham University and got a bachelor’s degree in theater and journalism. During his break, he worked as a creative arts head at a summer camp. While there, a coworker suggested that he try acting. This idea made Washington decide to attend the Lincoln Center site of Fordham University. There he started to act in plays, usually as the lead.

Washington got his first TV part right after college, but it wasn’t until 1982 that he got his big break: he was cast in the TV show “St. Elsewhere.” He married Pauletta Pearson in 1983. They met on the set of “Wilma.” In 1989, he got his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a soldier in the movie “Glory.” Critics loved the movies he was in in the 1990s, like “Philadelphia,” “The Hurricane,” and “Remember the Titans.” At this time, Washington also tried making thrillers like “The Pelican Brief” and started his own production business.

For “Training Day,” Washington got the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2001. He was the first African American actor to win the award since Sidney Poitier. Denzel Washington directed and co-starred in his first full-length movie, “Antwoine Fisher,” the next year. He then acted in more thriller movies over the next few years. In 2010, he returned to the stage with the Broadway revival of “Fences” and won a Tony Award for his performance.
