In 1968, Keaton made his Broadway debut in the original production of “Hair.” She appeared in “The Godfather” in 1970 and “Play It Again, Sam” the following year. Her most well-known parts were in the 1977 and 1973 romantic comedies “Annie Hall” and “Sleeper.”

Diane Keaton Family

Diane Hall Diane Hall was born in Los Angeles, California as Keaton. John Newton Ignatius “Jack” Hall was a real estate dealer and civil engineer. His mother, Dorothy Keaton, was a homemaker and amateur photographer. Keaton was reared as a Free Methodist by his mother. Her mother won the “Mrs. Los Angeles” housewife contest. According to Keaton, she first desired to be an actor and work on stage due to the dramatic nature of the event. She has also credited Katharine Hepburn as an inspiration for portraying strong, independent women.

1964 saw the graduation of Keaton from Santa Ana High School in Santa Ana, California. She was a member of the school’s singing and acting clubs and played Blanche DuBois in a school production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” during her stay there. After graduating, she attended Santa Ana College and then Orange Coast College as an acting student, but dropped out after a year to seek a job in Manhattan’s entertainment sector. Because Diane Hall was already registered as an actor, she changed her surname to Keaton, her mother’s maiden name, when she joined the Actors’ Equity Association.

In Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film “The Godfather,” Keaton was cast as Michael Corleone’s lover and eventual wife, Kay Adams, portrayed by Al Pacino. Coppola noted that he first observed Keaton in “Lovers and Other Strangers” and hired her for the character because to her reputation for quirkiness, which he desired. Her performance in the film was partially based on her real-life filmmaking experience, which she characterised as being “the woman in a world of males.” “The Godfather” attained unprecedented levels of both critical and financial success, topping the year’s box office receipts and winning the Oscar for Best Picture in 1972. Keaton also had a short-lived nightclub singing performance, which she reprised in the 1977 film “Annie Hall.” She made a cameo appearance in 1987’s “Radio Days” and starred in 2014’s “And So It Goes.” In 2017, Keaton co-starred with Brendan Gleeson in the British comedy Hampstead. In 2018, she starred alongside Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen in “Book Club.” It was her most commercially successful film since “Something’s Gotta Give,” despite receiving poor reviews. In the 2019 comedy “Poms,” Keaton played a cancer patient who develops a cheerleading squad with the support of other female retirement home residents.
