Dukhiram Swain Biography: Dukhiram Swain was an Indian film and television actor who perished on January 18, 1995. He was one of the most prominent antagonists in Odia cinema and appeared in a variety of roles, most notably as the antagonist in several Odia films and television serials. He was regarded as a member of the society of natural actors. Swain received the National Film Award for Shesha Shrabana (1976), the Orissa State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, and multiple “Best Villain” honours from the State Film Honours and the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi. He was conferred with Odisha Jayadeva Purashkar.

Early years

Dukhiram Swain was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement and the commander of the Odisha Paika Rebellion. However, his early existence is obscured by a lack of information.

It is believed that Dukhiram Swain was born in Odisha’s Khurda region in the 18th century. He belonged to the Paika community, which was historically responsible for maintaining law and order in the region.

Dukhiram Swain became involved in the struggle against British colonialism in India as a young man. He was a disciple of the legendary revolutionary leader Bakshi Jagabandhu, who led the 1817 revolt against the British.

Dukhiram Swain played a crucial role in the Paika Rebellion of 1817, an important revolt against British control in Odisha. Thousands of Paika soldiers participated in the rebellion, which was commanded by Bakshi Jagabandhu.

Following the British suppression of the rebellion, Dukhiram Swain and Bakshi Jagabandhu were apprehended and imprisoned. However, they were subsequently released in response to public pressure and continued their fight against colonial rule.

Dukhiram Swain Career

He was a linguist who was fluent in multiple languages. His theatrical career began at the Annapurna Theatre in Cuttack. His first film was Sri Lokenath, released in 1960. Over the years, he became a cult figure in this acting subgenre after being offered predominantly negative roles. In contrast to the villainous characters he portrayed in his films, he was extremely sociable and generous, and he belonged to numerous organisations. His most notable films include Matira Manisha, Jajabara, Shesha Shrabana, Phula Chandana, Paradeshi Chadhei, and Rana Bhumi. He has played almost every type of role, including hero, villain, comedian, character, etc.

Awards and recognition

  • For the years 1984-1985, he got the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for acting.
  • Bhulihuena earned him the Orissa State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1987.
  • In 1994, he received the Jayadev Award for his contributions to the advancement and development of Oriya cinema.

He was married to Mrs Hemalata Swain, who passed away. Mr Akash Kumar Swain (Jagatsinghpur), Mr Prithiviraj Swain (Cuttack), and Mrs Dharitri (Swain) Das (married to Mr Nimain Charana Das and settled in Bolangir) are his surviving children. In addition, he is survived by three grandchildren from his daughter’s side: Mrs Pragyan Paramita Das (married to Mr Dhrutiman Das and residing in Bangalore), Ms Prachi Sucharita Das (Bhubaneswar), and Mr Niroopnath Das (Patnagarh).
