At the time, he held the record for the fastest 100 wickets in Tests by an Indian bowler (20 Tests). He was surpassed by Ravichandran Ashwin.

In addition to being widely admired and feared in domestic cricket, he enjoyed bowling to batsmen who were prepared to attempt to hit him. He possessed impeccable control over line, length, and flight, as well as a clean, quick, high action. He increased his odds of defeating his opponent in the air by spinning the ball in a classic high loop towards the batsman. Consequently, the ball bounced higher than anticipated. As a bowler with an aggressive mentality, he was also patient, baiting a batsman for over after over in an attempt to induce an error.
