He is the son of Cheryl Harris, a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, and South African poet and political activist Keorapetse Kgositsile. When Harris and Kgositsile divorced, he was eight years old. He attended New Roads Middle and High School in Santa Monica before continuing his education at the U.C.L.A. Lab School. Since he was a young child, he was captivated by music and frequently composed short beats on his own. In seventh grade, however, his interest transformed into a passion, and he began posting brief music clips on MySpace.
