Martin joined the band Menudo when he was 12 years old and played his first show in San Juan in 1984. He quickly became an important part of the band as they put out 11 albums, including the Grammy-nominated “Evolucion,” which had his first hit, “Rayo de Luna.” In 1989, Martin quit the band after turning 17. That same year, he released his first solo album, “Ricky Martin.”

The album was number one on the U.S. Billboard Latin Pop Albums lists for 41 weeks. Soon after, Martin got a part in “General Hospital,” and his third album, “Medio Vivir,” came out in 1995. The album sold almost seven million copies around the world, and the song “Maria” bought five million copies and topped the charts in twenty countries. The song was named the “Biggest Latin Hit” by The “Guinness Book of Records” in 1999. In the same year, he got his first Grammy Award for “Best Latin Pop Performance” and put out his first English-language album, “Ricky Martin.”
