She was employed as a secretary while residing at home. She met Arthur Gettleman in 1947, and they were wed nine months later. The couple had two offspring, Carl and Barry Gettleman.

In 1978, Getty landed a small character in the film “Team-Mates” after performing in several New York theatre productions. One of her most notable roles was in the 1985 film “Mask.” In the same year, Getty starred in the premiere season of the popular television series “The Golden Girls.” Getty portrayed Sophia Petrillo in “The Golden Girls” until 1992, and the series earned her the Golden Globe Award for “Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy” and the Primetime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.”

Getty reprised her role as Sophia Petrillo in four additional television programmes, including “Empty Nest” (1993–1995), “The Golden Palace” (1992–1993), “Blossom” (1990–1995), and “Nurses” (1991–1994). In 1999, she played Grandma Estelle in the film “Stuart Little.” Getty retired in 2001 due to health concerns and died in 2008 of Lewy body dementia.
