Following his upbringing in the Bowen Homes Housing Projects of Atlanta, Georgia, he graduated from Fulton Secondary School. He started weightlifting at the tender age of seven. Carter Morgan incorporated him into the Boys & Girls Club at the age of eight, whereupon he was first exposed to the realm of professional boxing. Overtly, he emerged victorious in the boy’s club combat contest. At the age of 22, he represented the United States in light heavyweight boxing at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, where he was awarded a bronze medal. By the conclusion of 1984, his amateur boxing record stood at 14 defeats and 160 victories (76 K.O.).
Holyfield debuted professionally in the light heavyweight division on November 15, 1984. On October 25, 1990, he confronted Buster Douglas for the heavyweight championship after advancing through the ranks. Douglas was knocked out in the third round, establishing him as the newly undisputed heavyweight world champion. Despite announcing his retirement in 1994 on account of a cardiac condition, Holyfield persisted in the ring until June 2014, when a technical knockout victory over Brian Nielsen marked his retirement.
He presently provides boxing advice to Zhang Zhilei. His three spouses were Candi Calvana Smith, Janice Itson (1996-2000), Paulette Bowen (1985–1991), and Evander Holyfield (2003-12). He had eleven offspring in total, consisting of five sons and six daughters. Evan, his son, subsequently pursued a career in professional fighting.
