From 1933 until his passing in 1945, this American politician and lawyer held the office of 32nd President of the United States. As a member of the Democratic Party, he was a major player in global affairs throughout the first part of the 20th century and won four presidential elections. As the head of the federal government during the Great Depression, Roosevelt responded to the biggest economic crisis in American history by implementing his New Deal domestic agenda. On January 30, 1882, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York, a village in the Hudson Valley. Sara Ann Delano and James Roosevelt I were his parents. After attending Columbia Law School and Harvard Law School, he wed Eleanor Roosevelt. After entering politics as a Democrat, he was chosen to serve in the New York Senate in 1910. President Wilson appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and in 1920 he was the Democratic nominee for vice president.

In November 1932, Roosevelt won his first of four terms as president after winning the governorship of New York in 1928. Although the nation had started to recover by 1935, bankers and merchants were growing more and more opposed to Roosevelt’s New Deal initiatives. They feared his experiments, were incensed that he had moved the country off the gold standard and withstood fiscal deficits, and detested the labor concessions. In response, Roosevelt unveiled a new reform agenda that included a vast jobless assistance program, tighter controls over public utilities and banks, more taxes on the wealthy, and Social Security.
Roosevelt had committed the U.S. to a “good neighbor” policy, converting the Monroe Doctrine from a unilateral American manifesto into agreements for collaborative action against aggressors. Additionally, he tried to fortify nations that were under attack or threat while avoiding American involvement in the European conflict by enacting legislation protecting neutrality.
He started offering Britain every kind of assistance possible, except direct military intervention, once France submitted and England came under attack in 1940. In anticipation of a world war, Roosevelt pushed for the mobilization of the country’s forces and resources following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Roosevelt gave the idea of creating the United Nations, which would have the authority to settle international conflicts, a lot of thought. On April 12, 1945, at Warm Springs, Georgia, Roosevelt passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage.
