Frida Kahlo Birthday

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon, also known as Frida Kahlo, was a Mexican painter whose works were influenced by the traditional culture, nature, and artefacts of Mexico. She is recognised as one of the finest artists in Mexico. Kahlo was born in Mexico on July 6, 1907. Her father, Guillermo Kahlo, was of German ancestry, while her mother, Matilde Calderon y Gonzalez, was of Mestiza descent. Her family residence in Coyoacan is now a museum dedicated to Frida Kahlo. As a youth, Kahlo contracted polio and was bedridden for nine months.

After recuperating from polio, Kahlo’s legs were deformed, causing her to walk with a limp. She obtained an art instructor, Fernando Fernandez, because she had an early interest in art. She was his paid apprentice in engraving, and he was very impressed with her skill. She was incapacitated for three months following a horrific bus accident when she was 18 years old. Staying in bed inspired Kahlo to paint and draw self-portraits, as well as those of her schoolmates and sisters.

In 1930, Kahlo relocated to San Francisco, California, and was introduced to American artists such as Nickolas Muray, Edward Weston, and Ralph Stackpole. In 1931, she created a double portrait of her wedding photo titled “Frieda and Diego Rivera.” She moved to Detroit with her husband, Diego Rivera, and honed her artistic abilities by experimenting with fresco and etching techniques. In 1932, she created “Henry Ford Hospital,” “My Birth,” and “Self-portrait on the Border of Mexico and the United States.” These never made it to the Detroit exhibitions, but she was interviewed by U.S. newspapers. She returned to Mexico in 1934 and continued to paint. In 1938, her works “My Nurse and I” and “Four Inhabitants of Mexico” were displayed at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Edward G. Robinson paid $200 per painting for four of her works. Andre Breton, a French Surrealist, gave her additional recognition. Her works were exhibited in 1941 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston despite facing numerous obstacles. Kahlo became a founding member of Seminario de Cultura Mexicana in 1942 in order to disseminate the word about Mexican culture. She was awarded 5,000 pesos for one of her paintings titled “Moses.” She was able to achieve recognition as an artist in both Mexico and the United States. In 1954, she painted her final works, “Marxism Will Give Health to the Sick” and “Frida and Stalin.” Her painting “The Tree of Hope Stands Firm” was sold for $19,000 after her death. She was recognised as one of the finest Mexican artists of the 21st century after her death, when her reputation as an artist skyrocketed. In 2006, when her painting “Diego and I” was auctioned, she became the first Latina artist to sell an artwork for more than $1 million. In 2016, “Two Lovers in a Forest” sold for more than $8,000,000. In 2014, Kahlo was one of the inaugural honorees of the Rainbow Honour Walk.

Up until her death on July 13, 1954, Kahlo lived a fulfilled existence, despite facing numerous health challenges. She wed Diego Rivera, who was twenty years her senior, in 1929, divorced him in 1939, and then remarried him in 1940. Because of the bus disaster, Kahlo was unable to have children. Despite being bedridden for a period of time due to unforeseen circumstances and disasters, she found fulfilment in painting. A portion of her limb was amputated to prevent the spread of gangrene in her right foot. Her prominence increased after her passing. Hayden Herrera published “A Biography of Frida Kahlo” in 1983, and in 2002, the film “Firda” was released and nominated for six Academy Awards. It won the awards for Best Makeup and Original Score.
