Early life

Timothy Douglas and Natalie Hawkins Douglas welcomed Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas, better known as Gabby Douglas, into the world on December 31, 1995, in Virginia. From an early age, she displayed remarkable abilities, including a surprising level of flexibility that persuaded her family to enroll her in gymnastics. Douglas was more committed to learning and honing her gymnast talents than most teenagers by the time she was six years old, and she was practicing very hard. Douglas shocked everyone by winning the competition’s all-around division when she was just eight years old and competing at the Virginia State Championships!

Career

When Douglas was just 13 years old, she made her maiden national debut and started her professional gymnastics career in 2008 at the U.S. Classic. Although she didn’t do well in this competition—she finished in tenth place—it was only the beginning for this young, potential winner. When she and her teammates won the gold in the Tokyo Global Championships in 2011, her career truly took off. The following year, Douglas’ selection to the 2012 Olympic team was one of the most significant moments in her career. Douglas and her team won gold at the Summer Olympics in 2012. She did not win any gold in the solo competition, but she did win gold in the individual all-around competition, which helped her become well-known in American sports and a celebrity.
