Gayle King was born in Chevy Chase, Maryland, on December 28, 1954, and is African American. Gayle King was born to Scott King, an electronic engineer, and Peggy King, a housewife. She is the oldest of four children, with three younger sisters. She lived with her father in Ankara, Turkey, for a few years when she was young.
When her family moved back to the U.S., she went to college at the University of Maryland, College Park, and got a bachelor’s degree in psychology. After high school, King chose to work in the media. In 1976, he started working as a production assistant at WJZ-TV in Baltimore. She met and became friends with Oprah Winfrey, who was a host for the station at the time.
