GG Allin was an American punk rock musician and songwriter who was notorious for startling stage performances, including self-mutilation and assaulting his audience.
Allin’s father gave him the name Jesus Christ after claiming that Jesus had visited him and told him that his son would be famous. Allin grew up alongside his older brother, Merle Jr., who was unable to correctly enunciate the name “Jesus” and referred to him as “Jeje,” which later evolved into “GG.” Allin and his family lived in a log cabin without electricity or running water in Groveton, New Hampshire. The father was a violent fanatic who threatened to kill his family. According to Allin, his father intended to commit murder-suicide against his family.
Allin’s parents divorced in 1961. His mother, Arleta, relocated him and his sibling to East St. Johnsbury, where she remarried. Allin developed an interest in music during this time period. He became a devotee of British popular bands such as “Mott the Hoople” and “The Dave Clark Five.” GG started recording music with an acoustic instrument in the early 1970s.
Allin graduated from Concord High School in 1975 and, shortly thereafter, co-founded the band “Malpractice” with his elder brother, a local musician named Jeff Penney, and a high school acquaintance named Brian Demurs. Allin was the percussionist until the band’s dissolution in 1977. Three years later, Allin released his debut album entitled “Always Was, Is, and Forever Shall Be.” He continued to issue hit albums until he passed away on June 28, 1993.
