Harish Rawat Biography: Harish Singh Rawat is an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2014 to 2017. He was born on April 27, 1948. Rawat, a five-time member of the House of Representatives, is a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress. Rawat, a member of the 15th Lok Sabha, served as Union Minister of Water Resources in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet from 2012 to 2014. In addition, he served as Minister of State for the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (2011–2012), and Ministry of Labour and Employment (2009–2010), respectively.

Early Years and Education

Harish Rawat was born on April 27, 1948, in Mohnari village (Adbora Mohnari Graam Sabha), close to Chaunalia (263680), Ranikhet in the Almora district of the United Provinces (now Uttarakhand) to Rajendra Singh Rawat and Devki Devi. Early in his education, he attended GIC Chaunalia. He has a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from Lucknow University. He is married to Renuka Rawat, a fellow Congresswoman and politician who also holds a Bachelor of Law from Lucknow University.

Career in Politics of Harish Rawat

Harish Rawat began his political career at the village level, where he held important positions such as Block Pramukh and Gramme Pramukh. He was a member of the Youth Congress and a Trade Union leader for a number of years, and he was initially attracted to the Indian National Congress’s political philosophy. The individual eventually joined the Indian National Congress (INC).

Rawat was first elected to the Indian Parliament in 1980 when he defeated veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi in the Almora Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituency, which pertained to the state of Uttar Pradesh at the time. Indira Gandhi’s return to office resulted in his election to the seventh Lok Sabha.

Harish Rawat was elected to the Indian Parliament three times in succession, having been elected to the Eighth and Ninth Lok Sabhas in 1984 and 1989, respectively. Subsequently, he held a variety of positions within the Congress, including membership on the Consultative Committee of Law and Company Affairs, the Public Account Committee, the House Committee, the Official Language Committee, and the Communications and Power Committee. He was also the leader of the Congress Seva Dal and the party’s volunteer division.

Harish Rawat was first elected to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of the Indian Parliament, in 2002. He served his complete six-year term until 2008. Harish Rawat joined the Standing Committee for Rural and Urban Development in 2003. In the same year, he was appointed to the Ministry of Power’s Consultative Committee. From July 2004 to November 2008, Rawat was a member of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research Society.

In 2009, when the Congress-led UPA retained power at the Centre, elected to the Indian Parliament for the fifth time and the Lok Sabha (Lower House) for the fourth. During the 2009 General Elections.
