Harriet Tubman Biography: Age, Height, Birthday, Family, Net Worth

Harriet Ross Tubman, born Araminta 'Minty' Ross, was born a slave on the Dorchester County, Maryland, plantation of Edward Brodess.

Harriet Tubman Biography: We like to believe that the March 6, 1820-born Harriet Tubman was reincarnated in Rosa Parks. Parks was born the same year as Tubman’s death. Harriet Tubman learned from her enslaved mother what it means to have dignity, and she vowed to always fight oppression with freedom and equality. These convictions compelled Tubman to become a ferocious advocate for the abolition of slavery and the first woman to command a military operation during the American Civil War. This opened the door to her freedom and sparked an unstoppable anti-slavery movement that continues to this day.

Harriet Tubman Birthday

Harriet Ross Tubman, born Araminta ‘Minty’ Ross, was born a slave on the Dorchester County, Maryland, plantation of Edward Brodess. Her mother was owned by Mary Pattison Brodess, and her father was owned by Anthony Thomson. The exact date of her birth is unknown because the majority of slaves’ records are incomplete or were given insufficient weight, but it is agreed that she was born between 1820 and 1822. Early on, Tubman’s three sisters were sold to other owners, thereby tearing the family apart. Her only brother, Moses, was hidden from potential buyers, and Rit vowed to kill anyone who attempted to steal her son. Harriet learned the importance of standing up for her dignity and adopted strong positions against slavery as a political concept as a result of this event.

Ben Ross was liberated in 1840, while Tubman’s mother remained a slave. Tubman married freedman John Tubman in 1844. This began providing Harriet with legal hints regarding how to fight for the freedom of her people. From 1849 to 1851, she worked as a conductor on the “Underground Railroad,” transporting African-Americans to the north on her train. This job helped her learn about and connect with the towns and people she was fighting for, and the time she spent studying maps gave her a unique strategic and military background.

During the American Civil War, Tubman joined the “Union Army” as a spy and frequently disguised herself to scout enemy territory. Her assistance was valued not only on the military and logistical fronts, but also as a nurse who administered traditional herbal remedies to wounded soldiers. She raised enough money to pay for the freedom of many former slaves after the Civil War, and she also protested for the right of women to vote. She died in 1913 after caring for the elderly in a New York home for 30 years.
