Hayao Miyazaki Biography: Hayao Miyazaki, who was born on 5 January 1941, is one of Japan’s numerous cinematic idols, having transformed the world of animation with his numerous masterworks. Early in his career, Miyazaki grasped the difficulties of animation production by working for a corporate animation company. The creator’s first step into the world of animation was the critically acclaimed “Hols: Prince of the Sun” film. Since then, the animator’s brilliant works have captivated audiences worldwide. Today, we recognise his extraordinary accomplishments.

Hayao Miyazaki Family

Hayao Miyazaki was born in Tokyo, Japan, on January 5, 1941. He was the second of four children born to aviation engineer father Katsuji Miyazaki. When Miyazaki was a boy, Japan was in the midst of World War II, which rendered the capital city extremely perilous. Miyazaki attended Eifuku Elementary School and Omiya Junior High School after his family migrated to Utsunomiya. During this period, he fell in love with manga, a sort of Japanese comic. Even when attending Gakushuin University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science in 1963, he never lost his love for manga.

Miyazaki began working for the Japanese animation powerhouse Toei Animation after graduating. There, he worked on films such “Wolf Boy Ken” and “Watchdog Bow Bow.” In 1968, Miyazaki had the opportunity to work on the animated feature “Hols: Prince of the Sun,” for which he served as the lead animator and scene designer. He worked on the animated picture “Puss in Boots” a year later. Miyazaki, a seasoned animator by 1971, thought he needed a larger platform to work from, so he left Toei Animation and joined A-Pro, where he worked on “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” and “Animal Treasure Island.”

The latter works of Miyazaki, such as “Porco Rosso” and “Princess Mononoke,” were viewed as a departure from his earlier work and received widespread acclaim. After the death of the project’s original director, Mamoru Hosoda, Miyazaki returned to filmmaking in 2004 with “Howl’s Moving Castle.” The film was a success with Japanese and international viewers, thrusting Miyazaki back to the forefront of animation. Miyazaki returned to the scene in 2008 with the film “Ponyo,” which grossed about $200 million at the box office. Since then, Miyazaki has authored the screenplay for “The Secret World of Arrietty” (2010), collaborated on the screenplay for “From Up on Puppy” (2011), and directed “The Wind Rises” (2013).
