Early Life
On December 31, 1869, Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was born in Paris. He started painting in 1889. In 1891, he enrolled in painting studies at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts with Gustave Moreau and the Académie Julian with William-Adolphe Bouguereau. He mostly painted landscapes and still lifes in the conventional, academic style when he was a student. But in 1897, after seeing Van Gogh’s paintings, he began to adopt a different style. Not long later, in 1905, he painted “Woman with a Hat.” The picture, which had thickly brushed white, blue, and green tones, depicted his wife Amelie.
Career
Matisse’s obvious departure from academic painting infuriated many reviewers, and the piece earned him the nickname “Fauve,” which translates to “wild beast.” He swiftly ushered in the Fauvist art movement because of these critics. Between 1912 and 1913, Matisse spent several months in Morocco, where he created about twenty-four orientalist paintings and drawings depicting odalisques and the harem, among other topics. When traveling, he was fascinated to photographing the opulent furnishings and textiles he found. One example is “Odalisque in Red Trousers,” which dates from approximately 1924 to 1925. The lavish furnishings, clothes, and materials in this image suggest the exoticism of the Orient.
One of Matisse’s depictions of the odalisque, “Odalisque au Fauteuil Noir,” fetched $17.6 million at a Sotheby’s auction in 2015. Two of his other major pieces, “Dance” (1910) and “The Joy of Life” (1905–1905), are currently kept in museums and other prestigious establishments. Matisse began producing prints on a regular basis in 1906, although his fame as a painter and sculpture remains greater. Particularly active in the lithography process, Matisse created black and white book illustrations in addition to over 100 original lithographs at the Mourlot workshop. The lithographs usually featured reclining nudists, interiors, and portraits as serial subjects, and were produced in editions of 25 to 50.
His lithographs had the same immediacy and intimacy as his pencil sketches because they were mainly black and white. That’s the reason he liked lithography. In the last years of his work, he stopped painting because of his deteriorating health. However, it was his passion for creating and acute sense of design that led him to adopt cut-outs as a new artistic medium. With this method, which he called “painting with scissors,” Matisse created patterns for ceramics, tapestries, stained glass windows, maquettes, and bookplates. The fact that his tapestries reintroduce his instantly identifiable artistic style makes them particularly engaging.
Personal Life
In 1894, Matisse and fashion model Caroline Joblau had a daughter, Marguerite. Following his 1898 marriage to Amélie Noellie Parayre, the two raised Marguerite and had two boys, Pierre (born 1900) and Jean (born 1899). Amélie and Marguerite served as his regular models. At the age of 84, he died of a heart attack on November 3, 1954. He is buried in the Monastère Notre Dame de Cimiez cemetery in the Cimiez suburb of Nice.
