Howard Hughes Biography:

Early Life

Born in Houston, Texas on December 24, 1905, Howard Robard Hughes Jr. was a multifaceted American business magnate who gained respect for his contributions to several industries. Allene Stone and Howard R. Hughes Sr., a prosperous inventor who established the Hughes Tool Company in 1909, were his parents. Hughes was descended from Huguenots in France, Wales, and England. From a young age, he showed an interest in science and technology, and at the age of eleven, he constructed Houston’s first wireless radio transmitter. Hughes completed some classes at Caltech in addition to attending Fessenden School in Massachusetts. When Hughes’ parents died in 1924, his father left him a will that included 75% of his fortune.

Career

Hughes produced and funded his first movie, “Swell Hogan,” in 1926. It was such a failure that he gave the order to have it destroyed. After that, he oversaw the successful productions of “Everybody’s Acting” (1926) and “Arabian Knights” (1927). The Academy Award for “Best Director of a Comedy Picture” went to the latter. He invested $3.5 million to produce “Hell’s Angels,” which was nominated for a Best Cinematography Academy Award in 1930. In addition, he produced Scarface in 1932.

Hughes established the Hughes Aircraft Company in that year. Among his many global air-speed records was the fly across the globe in 91 hours set in July 1938. For setting the world record in the global circumnavigation, Hughes and his team were awarded the Harmon Trophy in addition to the Collier Trophy.

By 1944, Hughes had acquired an aerospace company in addition to 78% of Trans World Airlines. He continued to produce movies, purchasing R.K.O. Pictures in 1954 for around $24 million, and selling his Trans World Airlines stock for $546.5 million in 1966. In 1968, The Hughes Tool Company acquired the North Las Vegas Air Terminal as part of Hughes’ real estate ventures. He founded the Howard Hughes Corporation in 1972. He purchased the hotel in Las Vegas instead of leaving his room at the Desert Inn. Hughes invested more than $300 million in the development of Las Vegas. He had a key role in transforming the city’s image from one of a Wild West to one of a chic metropolis.

Personal Life

Hughes was a very rich business magnate, therefore everyone knew everything about his personal life. Hughes wed Ella Botts Rice in June 1925. The couple separated in 1929. He dated several well-known ladies, including Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, and Joan Crawford. In 1957, he wed Jean Peters, but the two later got divorced in 1971. On April 5, 1976, Hughes passed away while flying. His wealth was distributed among his 22 relatives, assistants, charitable organizations, and past girlfriends; he was childless.
