Rae, her four brothers, and her parents spent her early childhood years in Dakar, Senegal, before relocating to Potomac, Maryland, where they resided for several years. When Rae was in sixth grade, her family relocated to the Los Angeles neighbourhood of View-Park Windsor Hills. In addition to attending King Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science, she began acting there.

Rae attended Stanford University after graduating from high school and received a Bachelor of Arts in African and African-American Studies in 2007. During college, she expressed her creativity by writing and directing plays, making music videos, and even creating a satirical reality series called “Dorm Diaries” for fun. At university, she met and befriended Tracy Oliver, who eventually produced and starred in her hit web comedy “Awkward Black Girl.” She got a fellowship at The Public Theater in New York City following her college graduation, and she and Oliver enrolled in classes at the New York Film Academy together. In 2011, Rae developed and released her debut online series, “Awkward Black Girl,” on her YouTube channel, where she also plays the lead role.

Her series acquired popularity and became viral as a result of word-of-mouth spread via numerous blogs and social media posts. Rae and Oliver, thrilled by the popularity of the first few episodes of their series, used Kickstarter to fund the production of the remaining episodes of season one, which they uploaded and continued to stream on Rae’s YouTube account. Rae has delved into business and successfully co-founded her own record label called Raedio in 2019 in addition to acting and producing relevant and engaging television series.
