Early Life

Ivar Ivask was born to Estonian parents in Riga, Latvia. Ivask went to the University of Marburg to study comparative literature and art history. Then, he departed for the United States to attend the University of Minnesota as a student.

Career

He began teaching in 1952, first at the University of Oklahoma and then at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. He was appointed editor of Book Abroad, an international literary quarterly that underwent a name change. Ivask was an ideal editor because, although specializing in German and Hispanic literature, he was familiar with the works of Scandinavian writers. Ivask oversaw the Neustadt International Prize for Literature as well.

As the coordinator, Ivask welcomed many writers from around the globe, and this prize was given out every two years. Ivask was well-liked as the coordinator because he was well-known for his kindness and patience during the discussions. Ivask coordinated these and founded the Puterbaugh Conference on writers of the French-speaking and Hispanic world.

His first poem was published in 1964, and he started writing poems in English in the 1980s. In addition, he was honored with multiple awards, such as the University of Oklahoma’s Regents Award for Superior Achievement and the Foundation for Estonian Arts and Letters Award.

Personal Life

He was married to Astrid, a lady from Latvia. After getting hitched in 1926, the couple never had children together. He eventually became a citizen of the United States in 1955.
