James Hillier Blount, also known as James Blunt, was born in Tidworth, England, on February 22, 1974, to Jane Ann Farran (née Amos) and Colonel Charles Blount. His younger sisters are Emily and Daisy. Blunt began piano and violin lessons as a child, but after discovering the electric guitar at age 14, he became more interested in playing it. He enrolled at the University of Bristol following graduation to study aerospace manufacturing engineering and sociology. After completing his bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1996, Blunt was obligated to serve at least four years in the military due to the army bursary that had funded his education. He was commissioned into the Life Guards, rose to the rank of captain, and volunteered to join a squadron deployed to Kosovo in 1999 with NATO. He extended his military service in November 2000 and was assigned to the Queen’s Guard’s Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment in London. He left the army in October 2002 after six years of service.

Blunt knew after leaving the military that he wanted to pursue a career in music. As soon as someone heard the demo for his original song “Goodbye My Lover,” he was signed to E.M.I. music. After performing at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, Blunt also signed a recording contract with Linda Perry, who was launching Custard Records. Blunt recorded his debut studio album, “Back to Bedlam,” in Los Angeles in 2003, and the album’s third single, “You’re Beautiful,” became an overnight sensation. The song debuted at number 12 in the United Kingdom before climbing to the top spot six weeks later. In 2006, Blunt became the first British artist to top the American singles chart in nearly a decade when ‘You’re Beautiful’ topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The single’s success helped launch Blunt’s world tour and earned him two Brit Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and multiple Grammy Award nominations. Over 11 million copies of his debut album were sold. 2007’s “All the Lost Souls,” Blunt’s second studio album, was certified gold within four days of its release.

Blunt released his third studio album, “Some Kind of Trouble,” in 2010. It featured the single ‘Stay the Night’, which sold over one million copies. Three years later, he released another album, “Moon Landing,” which included the single “Bonfire Heart,” which topped the charts in Europe and Australia. In 2019, he collaborated with German D.J. and producer Alle Farben on the dance music single ‘Walk Away’ He released his fifth studio album, “The Afterlove,” in 2017. Blunt released the song “Cold” and his sixth studio album “Once Upon a Mind” in the same year. 2021 saw the release of his first greatest hits album, “The Stars Beneath My Feet.”
