James Edward Franco is one of Hollywood’s most recognisable personalities. In all of his films, he has portrayed a wide variety of characters, from a man imprisoned in stone to a supervillain, with equal skill. Born on April 19, 1978, in Palo Alto, California, under the sign of Aries, he is of Portuguese-Swedish and Jewish descent. Franco is the son of children’s book author Betsy Lou and Silicon Valley industrialist Douglas Franco. His brothers, actors Tom and Dave Franco, are his siblings. He was an English major at the University of California, Los Angeles, but he left out to pursue acting.

Before appearing for auditions in Los Angeles, Franco had 15 months of acting training. His first paid acting role was in a Pizza Hut commercial. He had minor roles in numerous television programmes. In 1999, he eventually landed the lead role in “Freaks and Geeks.” Even though the programme was cancelled after 18 episodes, it was a huge success and Franco’s big break. He made his film debut with the romantic comedy “Never Been Kissed” (1999) and was subsequently cast as James Dean in the biographical television film “James Dean” (2001). The role of Harry Osborn in Sam Raimi’s “Spiderman” brought Franco a great deal of fame and attention in 2002. Before reprising the role of Harry Osborn in “Spider-Man 2” (2004), Franco appeared in “City by the Sea” (2002) and “The Company” (2003). Due to the film’s enormous success, he was cast in the dark comedies “The Ape” (2005) and “The Great Raid” (2005).

In “Spider-Man 3” (2007), James Franco reprised his role as Norman Osborn for the final time. In 2008, he starred in two successful films: the comedy “Pineapple Express” and the biopic “Milk.” In the former, the actor received his first Golden Globe nomination, while in the latter, he portrayed a gay character for the first time. One of Franco’s most nuanced performances was as Aron Ralston in “127 Hours.” This performance earned him Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations. He subsequently starred in “Your Highness” (2011) and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011). His most recent significant film role was in “The Disaster Artist” (2016). In 2017, he announced his intention to calm down and concentrate on himself.

He is currently unattached. In 1999, he dated actress Marla Sokoloff for five years. Until 2011, he was in a relationship with Ahna O’Reilly. His portrayal of homosexual characters in a number of his films, as well as his support for them, prompted numerous media inquiries regarding his sexual orientation. In a later interview, the actor stated, “I like to think that I am gay in my art and straight in my life.” Franco returned to UCL in 2006 to complete his English degree. In 2009, he published his debut novel, “Palo Alto.”
